Sadly, my pockets aren’t nearly deep enough to fund the project alone. That means I’m relying on people like you to make the project a reality. I wouldn’t ask if I didn’t think the project has the potential to make a real difference.
Where does the money go?
Costing is difficult on a project like this, but I have undertaken a bottom-up approach to budgeting to work out a minimum requirement as well as a higher range to cover project expansion. All project spending will be recorded and available to donors. All donations will automatically be put into a account created specifically for the advancing the project.
A fair amount of indirect and direct costs have already been covered by my own finances, no donations will go towards covering these costs, and at no point will funding from the project account enter any personal accounts. Similarly, no donations will be spent on non-project related leisure and entertainment.
Minimum estimations to make the project a reality are about £10,000 ($13,000 at time of writing). The ideal target is set at £20,000. With £10,000, the project will be able to proceed, however with higher levels of support, the scope, effectiveness, and reach of the project will be vastly magnified.
As well as donations, I shall be contributing my own savings and may apply for grants/sponsorship.
The following areas will make up the funding priorities:
Transport, Survival Costs, Guides, Translators, Promotion, Visas, Insurance, Web Maintenance, Essential Software and Hardware, Emergency Fund.
Following these, some donations may also be spent on post-trip production costs (e.g. publishing costs, video-editing services.)
Your donations are massively appreciated and I will be going to extreme lengths to ensure that your money is being used wisely. Money will be saved at every opportunity. (As someone who has worked as a freelance writer for several years, thriftiness has become a strong suit of mine). I will be staying in budget-accommodation, traveling cheaply, and avoiding unnecessary purchases.
If the project is over-funded, some donors may be offered refunds (if possible) post-project completion. If you would like to be considered for this, please be sure to include your details when you donate. Additionally, some excess funds may be donated to neutral, international, educational charities. No funds will be kept by me or spent on non-project related purchases (before, during, or after the trip).
